Occupational Disease

In the United States, labor laws protect the health and safety of workers and ensure the compensation of workers for occupational illness or injury. One of the farthest-reaching laws is the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OSHA), which allows government representatives to regulate workplace safety. It is estimated that nearly one million occupational illnesses and deaths occur in the United States annually. These are often caused by exposure to toxic chemicals, agricultural pesticides, asbestos, welding rod fumes, and other hazardous materials. Some forms of occupational disease include: blood disorders, pregnancy complications, lung ailments, and several forms of cancer. Regulation of workplace safety in the United States has often been tied to tragic accidents such as the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire of 1911.
